AGLA Theatre Events

Program mission: AGLA Theatre Events creates awareness of Arlington County's national leadership in support of live theatre, fosters involvement and support for the theatrical producing companies based in Arlington, especially those with a diverse cultural or GLBT focus and provides AGLA Members regular opportunities to enjoy noteworthy area productions of theatrical excellence.

Since 1999, AGLA has sponsored more than 50 theatre events. Participation averages 18-30. AGLA members established the Scholarship Fund in May 2000 with $6000 contributed through AGLA Theatre benefit performances.

A partial list of productions includes Take Me Out, Hairspray, The Producers, Fit to be Tied, Rocky Horror, R&J, Mamma Mia, Naked Boys Singing, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Lilies, The Importance of Being Earnest, Vita and Virginia, Measure for Measure, Bent, Pigmaleion, Malcolm, Poona the F*** Dog, Tiny Alice, The Maids, Boys in the Band, and Kilt.

Goals for 2005-2006

Did you know Arlington County is a Helen Hayes Awards winner? The "Helens" are to Washington, DC's eighty theatrical producing companies what "Oscar" is to the movie making community.

Arlington County received the Helen Hayes/Washington Post Award for Distinguished Community Service for its Arts Incubator Program. As a result of this program, arts activities in Arlington have grown by over 600 percent since 1990, and Arlington has become a national model for innovative and cost-effective local government support of the arts. -- Arlington County Annual Report for 2001.

Arlington received the Helen in observation of ten years of theatre support, including renovated, modern producing spaces: Gunston I and II, Theatre on the Run, Lubber Run Amphitheater, and the Rosslyn Spectrum. and direct and indirect support to the companies that call Arlington home.
