AGLA Anniversary Reception

AGLA celebrated its 35th anniversary on Friday, November 11, 2016 from 5:30 p.m.-10 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City.

Scholarship Reception

To ensure that AGLA is able to continue its commitment of providing scholarships for worthy high school seniors, it holds an annual scholarship reception. More Scholarship Info

AGLA held its 2014 Scholarship Reception on May 8 at the home of Virginia State Senator Barbara Favola and Doug Weik. All proceeds of the event go directly to AGLA’s scholarship fund, which supports the award of a $2,500 scholarship to one outstanding Arlington Public High School senior each year. Scholarship recipients are selected based on their demonstrated accomplishments in support of the Arlington Public Schools’ (APS) policies of diversity, fairness, safety, and equality, and/or their membership and activities in their schools’ Gay-Straight Alliance. Created in 2001, the AGLA scholarship fund supports the award of at least one scholarship annually.

The 2012 reception was held at the splendid home of Hamish Park and Roland Watkins. Highlights of the reception included an update on anti-bullying initiatives by Sally Baird, member of the Arlington County School Board. We also heard from Kisha L. Webster, Associate Director, Welcoming Schools project, Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Welcoming Schools offers tools, lessons and resources on embracing family diversity, avoiding gender stereotyping and ending bullying and name-calling in elementary schools. It offers an LGBT inclusive approach that is also inclusive of the many types of diversity found in our communities. We also heard from Dr. Carl W. Smith, former Executive Director, of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education.
